1. Classic Hardbat Tournament of Gloucester TTA 2004 at 12.06.2004 in Gloucester (England)

Gloucester Classic Hardbat Event

The first Gloucester Classic Hardbat Table Tennis Event held at the University of Gloucester on Sat 12 June 2004 was a great success with the majority of players enjoying themselves. The event was both fun and competitive. Gloucester Table Tennis Association are planning a similar event for 2005 and have learnt valuable lessons from the 2004 tournament. It is the GTTA's intention to invest back into sport and they will endeavour to donate surplus proceeds to childrens sporting charities within the UK every year.

The results of the tournament were:
Open Singles Winner : Darren Griffin (Glos-England)
Open Singles R-up: Scott Johnson (Glos - England)
Ladies Singles Winner: Regina Donovan (Cardiff-Wales)
Ladies Singles R-up: Brenda Annan (Cardiff-Wales)
Junior Singles Winner: Scott Johnson (Glos-England)
Junior Singles R-up: Shaun Hall (Cardiff-Wales)
Mens Doubles Win: Dave Harvey & Darren Griffin (Glos-England)
Mens Doubles R-up: Scott Gordon & Al Papp (USA)
Ladies Doubles Win: Regina Donovan & Brenda Annan (Cardiff-Wales)
Ladies Doubles R-up: Stella Davis & Janie Kirby (Glos-Eng)
Consolation Plate Win: Regina Donovan (Cardiff-Wales)
Consolation Plate R-up: John Tegg (Glos-Eng)

The organisers are really grateful to the support of all participants and found the standard of play to be of an extremely high level. Next year (2005) we will produce a list of hardbat rubbers etc., so as to avoid any misunderstandings. Perhaps more importantly, we will get the timing right and ensure that all matches are played (regrettably, we could not play the mixed or junior doubles on the day).

Highlights of the day were in the ladies singles with Regina Donovan (Wales) showing what a class act she is with both hardbat and sponge and demonstrated her fantastic allround game but not forgetting her Welsh colleague Brenda Annan who played a superb attacking game with hardbat. In the open singles not one player dominated as this was a hotly fought contest between Steve Hall, Dave Harvey, Al Papp and the eventual finalists Darren Griffin and Scott Johnson. The junior singles event brought together some very fine players such as Garth Kinlocke, Matt Ware, Sam White, Michael Harvey and the finalists Scott Johnson and Shaun Hall.
